Healthy Mouth Tips

Dental implants are quickly becoming one of the most popular dental procedures in the industry. This is because they mimic the look and feel of natural teeth and they are extremely durable in nature. The reason for their durability is because they are made from strong titanium and they are directly implanted into the jaw itself. Titanium has been known to fuse together easily with jaw bone and it promotes healthy growth of new cells in the mouth and creates a strong bond.

Before you are able to smile boldly with your new dental implants, you will need to undergo a surgical procedure to receive them. This procedure sounds a lot scarier than it actually is and many patients are turned away from the procedure because of the thought of surgery. While it may seem like it is a difficult and painful process, it causes little discomfort and it is considered to be very routine.

Here Are Three Reasons Why You Should Not Fear the Surgery

1. The procedure will always be planned out before it happens.

When you are getting ready to undergo dental implant surgery, you do not need to fear the procedure. Dr. Cho is not going to go into your mouth unplanned and without any type of guidance. You can rest assured that the procedure will be planned out beforehand. In fact, in our La Habra, CA office, we will create a surgical guide that Dr. Cho will use and rely on to make the necessary incisions within your mouth.

2. You only need to receive local anesthesia for the procedure.

Many patients are surprised to find out that they do not have to go under any type of general anesthesia to have the procedure performed. In fact, you will find that Dr. Cho only needs to administer local anesthesia at the site. This anesthesia will numb the tissues around the incision area and you will not feel any pain.

If you are worried about the procedure or have anxiety about it, you can talk to Dr. Cho about other options for anesthesia.

3. Pain and discomfort are minimal in nature.

Many patients think that a dental implant procedure is very painful and will leave them debilitated for days or weeks afterwards. While it may seem this way, it is not. In fact, the procedure does not cause you any type of pain and there is minimal discomfort experienced with it. There is little disruption to your gum tissues and self-absorbing sutures are used to stitch the gums back together.

When you have, this procedure performed, you will only need to take an over the counter medication to help ease any pain that may be associated with it. If you need something stronger than that, Dr. Cho will prescribe it to you at his discretion.

The implant site will heal rather quickly and does not require a lot of time. There is a 95 to 97 percent success rate, so you are almost guaranteed to see results.

An Overview of the Dental Implant Procedure

Many people tend to worry about the dental implant procedure and they overthink what will happen. At Dr. Kenneth Cho Dentistry, you have nothing to worry about. We will provide you with all of the information you need about your upcoming appointment and we will make sure you are as comfortable as possible in our La Habra office. Below, we will explore what to expect before, during, and after the procedure.

1. Pre-Surgery

Prior to the start of the surgical procedure, you will come into our La Habra office and receive an oral examination by Dr. Cho. He will be able to tell you if you are a good candidate for the procedure or not. If you need to have work done before the procedure, we can schedule you in for it. You will receive a set of x-rays while here, as this will help us create the proper surgical map.

If you have any type of anxiety or questions about the procedure, you need to let us know. We do offer additional sedation options and can accommodate you.

2. Surgery Day

On surgery day, you will have your entire mouth prepped for the procedure. What this means is that a hole will be formed into the jaw bone where the implant will go. This hole needs to be precise and formed correctly to ensure the proper fit of the post. Small incisions will be made into the gums, so that Dr. Cho can see the bone underneath.

The hole will now be made and is done through a sequence of drilling procedures. You will feel vibrations as the procedure goes on. Once the hole has been made, the post will be implanted into the hole and then an x-ray taken to make sure it is in the right place.

The gums that were cut to make the hole will now be sutured and you will need to come back into the office in about a week or two to have Dr. Cho check the progress.

3. Post-Surgery

Dental implants have a very high success rate and that is why they are so popular. You do need to allow the bone time to heal, so you cannot expect the procedure to be fully complete in a week or two. You may need to take some over the counter pain medication for any swelling or discomfort, but you should not expect it to be that bad.

Many patients are fully healed from the procedure within six months to a year. Once the post and bone fuse together, you can receive dental crown on top.

Great Office!

New patient for examination and cleaning: Arrived early 11:48 am for 12:00pm appointment, had paperwork filled out by 12:01, called to the back at 12:16. Had full x- rays, photographs -in my opinion unnecessary - and a panoramic x-ray - which was a bad image as the bottom half of the image was obstructed by the lead apron. The dentist exam included deep poking of gums to check for gum pockets, heavy hands noted toward the back teeth which resulted in bleeding - I brush and floss regularly and never bleed from flossing, however, dentist recommendation was “gum treatment, ” which is essentially a deep cleaning under local anesthesia in all 4 quadrants, this is not fully covered by the insurance, I was quoted $600 out of pocket. I declined stating “I will not pay that.” The regular cleaning was not performed as I declined the deep cleaning, no other option. Just felt like the deep cleaning should be reserved for people with symptomatic gum disease, including symptoms such as bleeding or red gums - both of which I do not experience. I’m definitely getting a second opinion and recommend always getting a second opinion if a dentist readily “recommends” a “gum treatment” on the very first visit, which may be unnecessary and lead to unwarranted invasive treatment with possible complications.

Great personal care

Dr. Kenneth Cho is a dentist that we trust. My family and I have been going to his office for 20+ years. He was the first dentist for both of my children (now collage age), and they still go to him. He can take care of every need for oral health including braces. No need to go from place to place, and everyone in the office is friendly and helpful.
