If Dr. Cho were to ask you what a filling is, you would probably be able to tell him. Fillings are not new to the dental world and patients have needed them since dental work was discovered and started being performed. Whether or not you have healthy teeth or suffer from tooth decay, you will likely need a filling at some point in time. It is important for you to understand the different filling offerings and how they can affect you. Dr. Cho relies on fillings to protect your teeth and provide them with the additional support they need when there is a cavity. Cavities need to be removed and then filled to prevent sensitivity within the tooth.

There are a number of different fillings available and the type that is used in your mouth will depend on what problem you and Dr. Cho are trying to solve. Every filling has pros and cons to it and Dr. Cho will help you choose the best option. At Dr. Kenneth Cho Dentistry, we offer two main types of fillings, which include resin or composite and amalgam.

Amalgam fillings were previously relied upon for ALL fillings. These are the type that you are probably most used to seeing as they are silver in color. There are better known as metal fillings. Technology and research has greatly improved, which means so have the types of fillings that are used. Dr. Cho still uses amalgam fillings when needed, but other options are available for you to choose from too.

Amalgam fillings often need to be replaced if they were put in your mouth early on and you have not had them changed out. Older amalgam fillings may present a risk to you. Some of the disadvantages of older amalgam fillings include:

  • Weakened tooth structure
  • Unappealing in look
  • Can stain teeth
  • Mercury
  • Unnatural appearance in your mouth
  • Corrosion
  • Temperature sensitivities

If you no longer want your amalgam fillings, Dr. Cho is ready to replace them for you. Our second option for fillings include composite options that are matched to the natural color of your teeth. There are many advantages to this option and our patients often choose them. Some of the reasons you may choose a composite filling:

  • Resistant to breaks and cracks
  • Looks natural in your mouth
  • Does not corrode
  • Preserves your tooth
  • Does not stain the tooth

Reasons You Would Need a Filling

Reasons You Would Need a Filling You may be trying to determine WHY you may need to have a filling in your mouth. While the most obvious answer is cavities, it is not the only reason. Below, we will explore the reasons for your fillings.

1. Cavities

As we mentioned above, cavities are the most common reason people need to have a filling. The filling will help stop the tooth decay and also prevent the decay from spreading to other areas of the tooth or nearby teeth. Each and every mouth has a lot of bacteria within it and some of these bacteria are unhelpful and damaging. When bacteria eat sugar in your mouth and releases acids, the acids eat away at the enamel on your tooth and leave it susceptible to decay.

The moment this process starts to occur, you will notice a small white spot or white shading on your tooth. The area is white in color because the minerals are being stripped from the tooth. This stage of tooth decay can often be reversed if caught in time.

You do need to re-mineralize the tooth by using a fluoride varnish on your tooth. You should also come into our La Habra office for a dental checkup.

If a cavity forms on your tooth, it is permanent and there is no way to remove it. You cannot reverse any damage done to the tooth. Cavities in their early form do not cause pain or sensitivity, so they are likely to go unnoticed. A sensitive or painful cavity may mean that you need to have a root canal performed.

Cavities will worsen if they are not treated properly and in time, so it is crucial to call our La Habra office immediately. A filling will take between 10 and 60 minutes to complete. The amount of time that it takes will depend on the location and severity of the actual cavity itself. Most fillings are done with the use of a local anesthetic.

If you think you have tooth decay or need to have a cavity filled, Dr. Cho is ready to talk to you and help you out.

2. Exposed Root

Brushing your teeth seems like an easy enough task to do, but there is a right and wrong way to. If you are not properly brushing your teeth, you will end up wearing down your gums and exposing the tooth’s root. If this happens, you may need to have a filling to correct the problem and complete your smile.

If you have an exposed root, it is crucial to have it looked at because you do not want it to be caused from gum disease.

3. Cosmetic Restoration

Let’s face it, our teeth don’t always look how we want them to. This is okay, especially since Dr. Cho can provide you with the cosmetic restoration you need. Whether you have a break, fracture, or decay, a filling is able to return your smile back to one that you are proud to show off.

Cosmetic restoration comes in many forms and fillings are often a part of the process. If you would like to discuss cosmetic restoration, call our La Habra office now.
