What Is Oral Surgery?
If you are not familiar with what oral surgery is, do not worry. Many patients do not know what it entails until they are told they need to have a procedure performed. Oral surgery is a sector within the dental field that handles a variety of dental health issues to include defects of the jaw, diseases, and injuries. The most common type of oral surgery performed in our La Habra office and throughout other practices is extractions. Oral surgery does work to correct issues within your mouth, but it can also include procedures to improve your smile.
When people think about oral surgery, they often think too far into it and they imagine a procedure where they must stay at the hospital and they will be in immense pain or recovery mode for a long period of time. This is not what oral surgery is, even though it sounds scary. In fact, oral surgery takes place right in our La Habra office and you can go home the SAME day without any problems. Dr. Cho will provide you with the aftercare instructions you need as well.
It is important to know that all oral surgeries are not necessarily completed in a single day and you may have to come into our office for multiple procedures and appointments.
Types of Procedures to Be Performed
There are a number of different oral surgeries that can be performed and the type of procedure you need will depend on what condition you have and how it needs to be treated. Below, we will go over some of the types of surgeries that are available in our La Habra office.
1. Traditional Tooth Extractions
Tooth extractions are one of the most common oral surgical procedures that are performed and they are not as complex as some of the other options. Typically, an extraction is considered to be easy to perform unless the tooth breaks during the extraction and the roots need to be surgically removed.
2. Bone Grafting and Sinus Lift Procedures
Bone grafting and sinus lift procedures are performed to help provide you with the additional bone you need in your jaw to support implants or implant-supported dentures. These procedures require Dr. Cho to gain access to your jaw bone and then implant bone into the area to regenerate bone growth.
3. Dental Implants
Dental implants are another form of oral surgery and this type of procedure is used for tooth replacement. Small titanium posts are implanted into your jaw and allows to heal before and abutment and crown is placed on top. This is a very invasive type of procedure, which will require up to six months or more heal time.
4. Jaw Surgery
If you have a jaw misalignment, broken jaw, or other jaw conditions, you may need to have surgery performed to correct it. During a jaw procedure, Dr. Cho will make a small incision at the back of your mouth, usually, to gain access to the jaw. These types of procedures are quite complicated and may require more than one visit into our La Habra office.
5. Wisdom Tooth Extraction
Wisdom tooth extraction is a type of oral surgery that is needed and often relied on to remove teeth the pose a risk in your mouth. If you have overcrowding issues or your wisdom teeth are diseased, then you may need to have them removed altogether. If this is the case, Dr. Cho will work closely with you to ensure that you understand the procedure.
Is Oral Surgery Safe to Have Performed?
Oral surgery is considered to be a safe practice, but there are some side effects and risks that can occur. One of the biggest side effects that you need to be worried about is an infection. An infection can show up at any time and it can cause a lot of pain, especially if it is not caught and treated in a timely manner.
You also want to keep an eye out for how much blood you lose from the area where surgery was performed. Some blood loss is normal, but you should not lose a lot of blood over the course of days.
Lastly, patients need to keep an eye out for pain, swelling, and tenderness in the area. Mild symptoms are normal, but severe symptoms should always be reported to Dr. Cho.
