What Are Porcelain Veneers?

If you have not heard of porcelain veneers, you may be wondering just what they are and how they can help you. Some people have never even heard of them, so you are not alone. A porcelain veneer is best described as a thin, small shell that is made from porcelain and then cemented onto your tooth. Many patients choose porcelain veneers for their teeth because the veneers are resilient and they do not stain. This means that you can enjoy coffee, soda, and tomato sauce without the fear that your teeth with show it.

Veneers are also made to match the natural color of your teeth, so no one will even know that you have received them.

Why Do Patients Choose Veneers?

Patients choose veneers because they are effective at covering up flaws on teeth. For instance, if you have a tooth that is badly stained, veneers will cover it up and provide you with a beautiful, white tooth. In addition, veneers are used to help align your teeth and provide you with a straight smile once again. Many patients prefer veneers over traditional braces or other orthodontic options.

Veneers are perfect for:

  • Closing gaps
  • Straightening teeth
  • Hiding stains
  • Covering cracks or chips

Your Veneer Consultation and the Procedure

When you come into our La Habra office, Dr. Cho will sit down with you and perform an exam on your teeth. X-rays will be taken to ensure that there are no underlying issues with your teeth that need to be corrected first. If you are told that you are a good candidate for veneers, then the procedure will begin and you will be on your way to a beautiful smile.

When it comes to veneers, it is important for your to keep in mind that veneers are not just simply put on your teeth and that’s the end. Veneers need to be placed on teeth that are shaped first. The shaping of your tooth will include Dr. Cho removing a thin layer of the enamel. Many patients think that this process will hurt, but it does not. In fact, you will not even notice that any enamel has been removed.

After the enamel is gone, an impression of your tooth will be taken and sent to the lab. When the veneer comes back from the lab, you will come back in for a secondappointment and Dr. Cho will make sure the veneer fits your tooth. Once he is happy with the shape and position of it, he will then cement it to your tooth and place a light over top of it to adhere the tooth to the veneer.

Cons of Veneers

Just like any other procedure, there are always going to be cons to it and it is important that you know and understand them before you have the procedure done. Veneers are ideal for patients because they are durable and they resist staining, but they can be pulled loose and off if you chew on hard objects or do not take care of them.

Another downside to the veneer is that it is permanent. While most patients are happy with their veneers, if you decide later on that you are not, you cannot just simply take if off.

Your veneers do need to be replaced every five years or as they begin to show wear. This may or may not be inconvenient for some patients. If you would like a more permanent option, you may need to consider tooth-colored crowns.

Lastly, veneers are not exempt from tooth decay. In fact, if you do not care for your teeth, you will damage your veneer and develop tooth decay. You need to still brush and floss your teeth at least twice per day.

If you are unsure of how to care for your veneers properly, Dr. Cho will explain it to you and help you learn how to properly care for them.
