If you find yourself suffering from TMJ then it is time that you call Dr. Kenneth Cho Dentistry today. We want to provide you with the help and relief that you need, so you do not experience pain. Whether you have discovered that you hear a clicking sound when you talk or you have a stiff neck or jaw joint, Dr. Cho wants to talk to you about it.
While you try to muster it up and push through the pain of TMJ, you may find that it is difficult for you to live a normal life. Many patients never seek help for the condition until it has spiraled out of control and they simply cannot take the pain any more than they have to. You will find that trying to live with TMJ will only make the situation worse and it will eventually become difficult to eat and drink or talk.
There are a number of different symptoms that TMJ can cause and you may experience only a couple or all of them. If you do have any of these symptoms, you need to make an appointment to come see Dr. Cho in our La Habra office.
Some of the symptoms include:
- Problems when you move your jaw
- Facial pain
- Clicking noises coming from your jaw
- Jaw stiffness or joint pain
- Worn down teeth
- Uneven bite
What Causes TMJ to Form?
Unfortunately, it is not known WHY TMJ forms or what causes it, but there are some factors and conditions that may exacerbate the condition and play a role in why you may have it.
Some of the believed causes of TMJ include:
- Injury or trauma to the jaw, jaw joint, neck muscles, or head
- Bruxism or teeth clenching and grinding
- Problems with your jaw joint such as arthritis or displacement
- Improper movement of the ball and socket joint
Diagnosis is one of the most important steps in the treatment process because without a diagnosis, you cannot receive the treatment you need. When you come into our office for a consultation, Dr. Cho will go over all of your options with you while checking your jaw and surrounding joints.
There are a number of different treatments that are offered for TMJ, but the specific treatment you receive will be up to you and Dr. Cho to decide. When it comes to TMJ, the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research wants you to know that less is best. In fact, some steps you can take to aid in treatment include:
- Eating soft foods
- Practicing relaxation techniques to relieve stress
- Alleviate pain with a heating pad
- Avoid biting your nails or chewing gum
- Exercises designed to work out the jaw joints properly
- Night guards
- Prescription medication
If it is determined that you have an uneven bite or off-centered jaw and that is the reason for the pain, then Dr. Cho may recommend a surgical procedure to correct the problem.
